This 18th-century Cotswold stone cottage, situated within a conservation area, had previously been extended with a rear gabled addition. Securing planning approval for further development proved challenging due to the scale of the proposal, the sensitivity of the conservation setting, and the presence of nearby heritage assets.

Approval was ultimately achieved for a secondary two-storey rear gable extension, connected to the existing cottage through a recessed stone faced flat roof link.

 

The design approach focused on using traditional materials, proportions, and forms that responded sensitively to the character of the original cottage, allowing for a larger extension volume while remaining respectful to the historic setting.

The reconfigured ground floor created a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space orientated towards the garden, while the first floor accommodates a new principal bedroom with ensuite.

 

The project balances contemporary family living with the preservation of the cottage’s historic character and architectural identity.
